South American fur seal Grace has given birth at Living Coasts. She surprised animal staff by going into labour in the middle of the day on Thursday 25th May. 
There were some tense moments when it became clear that this was a breech birth and the pup was emerging tail first, but it was born naturally just as the zoo’s in-house vet team was preparing to intervene.

A charity dinner at Blenheim Palace has raised over £50,000 for an Oxford-based children’s and young adults’ hospice.
Hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, the VIP event featured a silent auction and live music, and tickets to the charity black tie function were £1,000 to raise vital funds for Helen & Douglas House. More than 70 people attended the Dinner.

The Tropical Butterfly House has had an unusual guest recently… a little owl was brought in by visitor Paul Tredgett. Mr Tredgett, of Killamarsh, Sheffield, found the owl in the middle of Marsh Lane at Eckington in Sheffield. The owl remained in the middle of the road and did not move when approached, upon closer inspection the owl appeared to have an eye infection. Mr Tredgett picked up the owl so that it wouldn’t get any further injuries on the busy road, and placed him on the passenger seat of his car.

This week, the restored scarlet silks worn by jockey Jem Mason when he won the first Grand National on the aptly named Lottery in 1839, go on display for the first time at The National Horseracing Museum (one part of the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing & Sporting Art) in Newmarket.
The National Heritage Centre at Palace House Newmarket acquired the historically important silks at auction. They employed a specialized textile conservator to restore them before the unveiling, the week of the 170th running of the world's most famous steeplechase.
